The word eczema or dermatitis refers to distinctive skin patterns, cracked, bleeding, dry itching patches with hard leathery skin, generally dry eczema. People with eczema often have a family history of allergic conditions such as asthma or hay fever. Factors like allergies to pollen, exposure to environmental irritants, fragrances or dyes added to skin lotions or soaps and stress can aggravate eczema. In acute stage, symptoms of eczema may include redness, swelling, papules, vesicles, large blisters, exudation and scaling. Over a period it may end up with dry leathery thickening with increased skin marking which may be secondary to rubbing and scratching. There may be fissures and scratch marks with pigmentation.
